We picked 3 activities - cooking/hot water, commuting & milk consumption - & worked how much we spent on them in a year & the CO2 emissions. This was to give us a starting position from which we hoped we could improve.
How did we work out the cost?
We calculated our annual total litres used in the 3 activities & multiplied that by the respective cost per litre: 2,555 litres of heating oil at 53p, 1,400 litres of diesel at £1.35 & 730 litres of milk at 44p. Total cost £3,565.
And the CO2 footprint?
We researched the CO2 released from using 1 litre of heating oil, diesel & milk. The figures are 2.96kg, 2.60kg & 1.23kg respectively. We multiplied the annual usage by these figures giving us a start point of 12,102 kgCO2 or 12 tonnes each year.
I’ll explain what changes we made to our cooking & hot water in the next post.
